TRUCK BAN ISSUE IN RESIDENTS HANDS
DEPUTY MAYOR WILL SUPPORT US, BUT WE NEED TO BRING PRESSURE
At the October Council Meeting, Deputy Mayor DiFolco stated that he believed it is time for the residents of Mount Holly to bring pressure on the Eastampton Town Council to support Mount Holly’s truck “pass through” ordinance 2022-10.
This is an unusual scenario folks. A sitting elected official formally asked residents to bring pressure on a body of elected officials in another jurisdiction. In conversation with Mr. DiFolco I received a promise that if we could organize a group of residents to make the pilgrimage to Eastampton, he would accompany us and raise his voice.
Here is the plan.
Phase 1: Create a Facebook page for our effort. Then circulate a petition here with the goal of 300 signatures. Raise money and deploy lawn signs that say “SLOW DOWN!”. While a Mount Holly petition will pose no direct electoral threat to the council members in Eastampton, the petition will make clear that the issue is not a minor one for our residents. Lawn signs will create a buzz and feeling of solidarity with neighbors about the effort. Further, all of these acts will tend to mobilize people for phase two of the plan.
Phase 2: Have a pre-meeting pizza party to gather at least 25 people to attend an Eastampton Council Meeting. The goal here is to speak at their meeting for 3 minutes each and tell our stories about truck traffic in Mount Holly. The noise, the vibration, the downed overhead wires,
the speeding and danger to kids and other pedestrians. Make them listen to our stories for a half hour or so and promise to come back the next month if we believe they are blowing us off. We want them to pass a resolution of support for Mount Holly ordinance 2022-10!
Phase 3: If Eastampton Council appears to be delaying, begin a petition drive in their town to find like minded residents who agree with our goal. Perhaps we can get 100 or 200 hundred signatures there. Enough to make that Council understand that they cannot ignore the issue without consequence.
