STRUCTURE FIRE ON BUTTONWOOD ST
Shared Services Agreement Brings Multiple Towns To Fight Blaze
A fire started this morning at 31 Buttonwood Street and eventually involved an attached home at 33 Buttonwood. According to the Westampton Fire Department Facebook post, responders “encountered a well-developed fire on the third floor of a duplex. Firefighters worked quickly and aggressively to initiate an attack, successfully containing the fire to the floor of origin. One minor injury was reported at the scene.”
The Reporter was at the scene and spoke with multiple Mount Holly firefighters who responded. There was agreement that “seamless coordination and teamwork” was on display between the various shared services companies that responded.
The Reporter was told that Westampton and Mt. Laurel were first on scene. A few examples of how companies worked together are as follows: Mount Laurel got the ladder along with a hose line stretched into the house by Westampton. Vincent Fire Company [Southampton] and Mount Holly worked to place ladders on the house for firefighter egress if needed, while Hainesport teamed up with Mount Laurel to assist with roof ventilation. Mount Holly and Lumberton stayed after the initial response to conduct “overhaul work” which is the final stage of firefighting when firefighters meticulously search for, expose, and extinguish any remaining smoldering embers, hidden pockets of fire, or "hot spots" to prevent the fire from rekindling.
At least one of the nearby homes was evacuated for a time but it appears that neither of the detached homes on either side suffered damage.
