FIRE DISTRICT SUED FOR CONFLICT OF INTEREST
SUIT ALLEGES VOTE TO HIRE DIRECTOR VIOLATED ETHICS LAW
By Nick Sodano, Editor
Two Mount Holly residents have sued the Mount Holly Fire District 1 Commissioners, Commissioner June Gaskil and Director Jason Carty for alleged violation of the State of New Jersey Ethics Law, New Jersey Statutes Annotated [NJSA] 40A:9-22. The suit was lodged in the Superior Court of New Jersey, Law Division, Burlington County on March 25, 2025.
The suit alleges that “June Gaskill had an impermissible conflict-of-interest when she voted to appoint Jason Carty as Director” because the “Director has direct supervision and authority over June Gaskill’s husband George Gaskill” and “by voting for her husband’s prospective and direct supervisor, violated NJSA 40:9-23[d] as she acted in her official capacity in any matter where she, a member of her immediate family has a direct or indirect financial or personal involvement that might reasonably be expected to impair her objectivity or independence of judgment”.
The suit seeks for the Court to void the vote on Jason Carty’s appointment and to void any contract that may exist between Carty and the Fire District.
