EDITORIAL: DON’T BELIEVE THE HYPE
COUNCIL ROUTINELY BLAMES COUNTY FOR ROAD ISSUES THEY CAN SOLVE
When resident complain about traffic, road conditions or shutting down a road for an event, you will routinely hear the Mayor say something like “its difficult. It’s a County Road”, which shuts the conversation down.
Even the smallest effort to confirm his words reveal its a dodge. Like the comment made when the owner of Zaddy’s wanted Washington Street shut down during a town event so crowds would be closer to his business. Turns out the section of Washington between his business and High street is owned by the Township. And the County Engineer said that road closures are not hard to obtain.
My interactions with the County Engineer’s office reliably show progress on issues within a reasonable timeframe, especially considering they have to deal with 40 townships. So what’s the Township’s real issue with the County?
A recent proof of County cooperation and free service given to Mt. Holly was the money spent to fix the problems on a TOWNSHIP road, namely Mount Holly Ave. This work has resulted in less accidents at that difficult intersection. See
And before I discuss the latest proof of how much the County does for Mt. Holly, know that I learned the radar signal on Garden Street, which displays vehicle speed, was also installed by the County.
In addition to these valuable infrastructure contributions, the County has just undertaken construction of sidewalks and fencing for the micro bridge on Garden Street near its intersection with Clover.
So, the next time you go to a Council meeting and hear the lament, “it’s a County Road”, tell them to stop with the excuses, get with the County Engineer and get the job done.
