COUNTY ACTS: GARDEN & MT HOLLY AVE
Stop Signs Coming Due To Continued Accidents At Intersection, Including Right Angle Collisions And Damage To Buildings
Readers may recall the petition circulated by The Mount Holly Reporter regarding speeding and traffic problems in town. Shortly after that County and Township officials met to discuss what could be done. Since then, a number of traffic control measures were taken by the County to improve the intersection of Garden Street and Mount Holly Avenue. And while an improvement was made, the number of accidents at that intersection remained problematic.
And so, the Burlington County Engineer’s Office, Traffic Section has acted to convert that intersection of Garden Street and Mt Holly Ave from a 2-way stop control to All-Way stop control (4-way stop), which should happen by 1/26/26.
This change follows several previous safety improvements at the intersection, including clearing sight-lines by removing trees and vegetation and extending “No Parking” areas, restriping markings, and adding signage to clarify traffic operation conditions. The County has also added a radar speed display on Garden Street east of Clover Street to alert drivers of their speeds.
County Traffic Engineer William E. Sheaffer said that “All these changes were made in cooperation with Mount Holly Township Council and fall under both Federal Highway Administration and NJDOT guidelines which recommend improvements like these before resorting to traffic control changes.”
These changes may cause slight inconvenience for motorists, but it is also likely to stop a number of accidents, some of which continue to be serious. Also, the Reporter will continue to monitor heavy truck traffic on Garden Street to assess if the new stop sign discourages the number of “pass through” trucks which use Mount Holly as a East-West short cut.
